Golden Horn by Ferry Tour

The Golden Horn is the inlet that separates the historic peninsula from the Galata side of the city. This tour travels along it on the public city ferry, the same boat residents use, rather than on a private launch, and ferry transportation is part of the price. You meet your guide at your hotel and ride the ferry to Balat, a neighbourhood on the historic-peninsula shore.

Most of the tour is spent on foot in Fener and Balat, two neighbourhoods that were for centuries home to Greek Orthodox, Jewish and Armenian families. The first stop is St. George Cathedral, the patriarchal church of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. From there the route climbs the colorful stairs and continues past the painted Balat houses that give the area its reputation for street photography.

Back near the water stands Sveti Stefan Church, the Bulgarian Orthodox church known for its prefabricated cast-iron structure. Both churches are active places of worship, so visits pause during services and covered shoulders and knees are expected. The streets between the stops are sloping and partly cobbled; comfortable shoes matter more here than on most Istanbul tours.

The route then moves upstream to Eyüp, where a cable car climbs Pierre Loti Hill, named after the French novelist Pierre Loti, who spent time at the café on its top above the Golden Horn. The Spice Bazaar, beside the ferry piers at the mouth of the Golden Horn, is an optional last stop; whether to add it is agreed with you before confirmation. Lunch, drinks and museum entries are not included, and other transport beyond the ferry is optional.

The tour lasts 4–5 hours and runs as a small group; a booking needs at least 3 guests, so smaller parties should ask on WhatsApp before requesting a date. The meeting time for your date is set in the written confirmation, because the day follows the public ferry timetable. In summer the uphill streets are warm around midday, and in wet weather the cobbles get slippery.

It suits travellers who have already seen Sultanahmet and want a residential side of the city, and those who like photographing streets more than museum halls. The stairs and slopes make it a poor fit for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
